The education system in Australia consists of Primary school: Kindergarten-Year 6,
Highschool: Years 7-12 followed by University. Students may face challenges in the
transitioning sector from Highschool to University as they learn to adjust to a new
environment, which is why it is crucial to be prepared for potential future challenges.

Selective test
An optional exam is taken in Year 6 of Primary school called the ‘Selective test’. Your
result dictates the highschool you will be attending from a range of schools called
‘Selective schools’. Schools like these reinforce the idea of active learning, as well as
providing students with a diverse range of resources that will benefit them educationally.
Students here tend to perform exceptionally well in the academic spectrum.

Majority of pupils settle for this route as they wish to challenge themselves amongst
other academically inclined peers. However, private schools as well as normal public
schools are also highly considered by parents and pupils.

A typical day in Australian highschool

Your highschool experience begins in Year 7, all the way up to Year 12. These 6 years
include many learning chapters as well as stepping stones towards your future in
university. Lessons generally commence at 9 AM and finish at 3 PM, with 5-8 subjects
each day. Your classrooms are situated in different areas at school, which means you
will have to move to your new classroom after each lesson.
Teachers are allocated to separate classrooms which essentially means that you
are moving from teacher to teacher, unlike Japan. To make this process easier for
you, you will be given a timetable with your teacher, classroom as well as subjects
outlining your lessons for the day from Monday-Friday.

Principals and Teachers
First and foremost, you will find that principals here focus heavily on creating an
environment where students are well-adapted to. They devote their time to ensure that
students have access to a safe learning environment as well as countless extra
curricular activities. Teachers also play a major role in this, as you will find them
constantly checking up on students’ mental wellbeing, as well as maintaining a steady
balance between school and social life. They can be seen as a mentor, providing
support and feedback throughout your highschool experience.
